If only Griffith had used fewer title cards and hired someone else to write them. Griffith was his own worst enemy in his use of title cards. His titels are so often unnecessary, objectionable in content or intrusive in placement. I would like to see Broken Blossoms and Way Down East screened with all of the title cards excised. (If any film students are reading this, doesn't that sound like an interesting project?) I would wager that the movies would be prefectly comprehensible; Griffith's greatest strength was his mastery of visual storytelling. I am certain they would be much more enjoyable.
