The Way Back: Peter Weir to direct fact-based story Thu October 16, 2008 Return to Film News Peter Weir will next direct The Way Back, the fact-based story of the escape of soldiers from a Siberian gulag in 1940. Weir, who has also written the screenplay, has not directed since 2003's "Master and Commander". The story, based on several sources, follows a group of soldiers, who after being captured by the Red Army in 1939, manage to escape and journey to freedom. The group crossed the Siberian arctic, the Gobi desert and the Himalayas, finally settling in Tibet and India. Source: Variety Related Titles: The Way Back
